The International
Step by Step Association - ISSA, an innovative network
of early childhood education and development professionals and
organizations, welcomes proposals and interested participants from
Eastern and Western Europe and from around the globe to the
interdisciplinary conference Active Citizenship: Democratic
Practices in Education, organized in partnership with the
World
Forum Foundation.
How does a nation develop and nurture the active, informed
citizens a democracy requires? How do we ensure that our educational
institutions are apprenticeships in democracy so that the next
generation can experience democracy in socially responsive,
inclusive and participatory classrooms and graduate into socially
responsible, vibrant and caring societies? How can those individuals
and groups advocating democracy on a global level work together to
promote specific policy and practical objectives affecting children
in their earliest years? This conference invites participants from a
variety of countries, professions, and points of view to strengthen
their commitment to the development of active, informed, effective
citizens everywhere. Without this commitment, the American
philosopher/educator John Dewey wrote almost a century ago, “the
influences that educate some into masters educate others into slaves.”
We share a vision of society in which none are masters and none
slaves—and in which all children are educated equally.
