Strand 2 - Socially Responsive Societies: Standing up for Young Children and Families

Morning Session

Taking the Mystery out of Advocacy/Policy - What You Can Do to Make a Difference

This workshop will introduce basic concepts in effective advocacy to promote a child’s right to healthy early development. It will build on the experiences of the Global Leaders for Young Children program, including examples from the region, as well as efforts to scale up early childhood around the world. The overall purpose of the session is to help participants build their skills to be more effective advocates in their communities and with others in their country.

In the workshop, participants will discuss what we mean by policy and advocacy and discuss five concrete steps to action:

  • Knowing what we want
  • Making the case
  • Identifying the people who can make change
  • Reaching out to new champions
  • Building support and public awareness

Examples of advocacy projects conducted by key leaders in the region will be presented along with ideas from a new global effort to scale up early childhood,

Joan Lombardi, Coordinator, Global Leaders for Young Children, USA

Sara Hommel, Wolfensohn Center at Brookings Institute, USA
