Summary
Europe, as the world at large, has to face severe limitations in the availability of resources, as well as the need for increasing amounts of affordable and environmentally friendly energy. This poses to the European States and its citizens an economic challenge of the first magnitude. Will the welfare state to which we have grown accustomed be sustainable? In this plenary session the presentation and discussion will center around two fundamental questions: What are the prospects that science and technology can loosen the constraints?, and what are the prospects that the economy can adapt to the limitations and go on delivering rising living standards, or, at least, a decent living for a population that may not be larger but that will certainly, and fortunately, live longer
