Pannonhalma, a town in western Hungary, is famous for its ancient monastery and a source of Hungarian medicinal plant culture. The participants of this excursion will have the opportunity to visit the recently renovated monastery, which is a World Heritage site, and the botanical and medicinal plant garden, where the tradition of benedictine medicinal plant cultivation is still preserved.

The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, founded in 996, is one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary, on top of St Martin-hill.The monastery was built in honour of Saint Martin of Tours. The first buildings of the community were destroyed in 1137, then rebuilt. The Basilica’s pillars and the early Gothic vault were built in the early 13th century, using the walls of the former church. In 1486 the abbey was reconstructed under King Matthias in the Gothic style.

The monastery became an archabbey in 1541, and as a result of Ottoman incursions into Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries it was fortified. During one and a half centuries of the Turkish Occupation, the monks, however, had to abandon the abbey for shorter or longer periods of time. Only later were they able to start the reconstruction of the damaged buildings.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, rich Baroque adornments and extensions were added to the complex and much of its current facade dates from this time. It received its present form in 1832, with the library and the tower, which was built in classicist style. The 18th century, the era of the Enlightenment also influenced the life of the monasteries. The state and the monarchs judged the operation of the communities according to immediate utility, by and large tolerating only those orders which practised nursing and education.

After 1945 Hungary became a communist state and in 1950 the properties of the Order and the schools run by the Benedictines were confiscated by the state, not to be returned until after the end of communism in Hungary. In 1996, “the Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment” was elected among the World Heritage sites.

The Tihany peninsula

The Tihany Peninsula, where cultural heritage and medicinal plant culture meets, with its unique microclimate and magnificient view to the Lake Balaton, is a perfect destination for a one-day trip.

The Benedictine Tihany Abbey, founded in 1055 AD, is a landmark building of the peninsula. The church itself was rebuilt in baroque style in 1754. The still functioning abbey is a popular tourist attraction due to its historical and artistic significance.

Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, was formed by tectonic sagging around 25,000 years ago. Tihanyi-félsziget (Tihany peninsula) divides the lake into two basins. The characteristic view of the Mediterranean landscape was formed by volcanic europtions millions of year ago as shown today by two giant calderas. The remains of these craters form two little lakes, without outlet, higher than the water level of Balaton: Belsõ-tó, which is popular with anglers, and Külsõ-tó, a paradise for aquatic birds. As a result of volcanic follow-up activity, thermal springs created more than one hundred geyser hills in the peninsula. Beside geological features, the peninsula is famous for its exceptional wildlife: the area became the first nature reserve of Hungary in 1952. For those who are interested in medicinal plants, apart from the diverse flora of the peninsula, the remainders of lavender plantations from the middle ages provide a memorable botanical excursion.

The ancient Tihany village was founded in the Middle Ages when King Andrew I founded here in 1055 a burial-place for the royal family and built a monastery, where Benedictine monks were settled. During the Turkish times, in the 16-17 th century, the monastery, which had been transformed into a fortress, was demolished. It was rebuilt in baroque style in the 18th century and became a symbol of Tihany. Tihany is a jewel of not only the Balaton but also Hungary.
